What Does the Color of My Teeth Mean?

Tooth color is one of the several signs that a cosmetic dentist in Coral Gables uses to determine your overall oral health.

In some cases, a darker color indicates an issue. In other cases, you may simply want us to whiten your teeth. Either way, let’s discuss the most common tooth colors, and what they suggest about your oral health.

White

Typically, we think of white as being the desirable color for teeth, but that isn’t entirely true. Baby teeth are white because they have a very low presence of dentin. The goal is for healthy adult teeth to look light gray.

This means there’s no cause for concern if your teeth are looking gray. If you’re regularly going to your dentist for teeth cleanings, they can examine your oral health and let you know if your teeth are beginning to yellow.

Yellow

Teeth typically turn yellow for one of the two following reasons:

  • They were stained by drinks, like coffee or tea.
  • Plaque has built up over time.

Regular brushing and dental visits can help resolve this issue. You may also choose to use a tooth whitening kit.

Brown or Black

Brown and black are concerning colors, since they can indicate the presence of tooth decay. However, they may also be caused by:

  • Tobacco
  • Genetics
  • Age
  • Medication

If your teeth are looking brown or black, you should visit a dental professional. They can whiten your teeth, as well as work with you to mitigate or reverse the presence of tooth decay.
